ASTR 3010 : Observational Astronomy

This course will cover various concepts of astronomical observations in the wide wavelength range (from X-ray to Radio). Data reduction techniques especially with an emphasis on programming will be presented. Students will have a hand-on experience of imaging and spectroscopic data reduction.

With the advent of greatly improved detectors and telescopes, a huge amount of data are (will be) being made public rapidly. This requires a complicated data reduction and analysis technique. Naturally, demands for good, efficient programming skills are increasing ever more for astronomers. I will try to use Python for reduction examples to be shown in the class. If necessary, I will use pyraf also.

An introduction on Python programming can be found here. If you are experienced with Python programming, this book may be more useful.
